In baseball, there are certain events that occur that are merely out of the control of the team, in this case, it is the weather. The New York Yankees have experienced an abnormal amount of rainouts up to this point in the season, which is becoming a growing concern. In the standings, the Yankees currently reside in first place over the Boston Red Sox by half a game, but the bizarre aspect lies within the total games played between the two teams.

The Yankees over the last four days have experienced the wrath of Mother Nature, resulting in two postponements during a divisional series against the Baltimore Orioles. As it stands, the team has encountered seven postponed games on the year, which is one of the most among any team in the major league. Fortunately, the team is playing extraordinary in games where the weather is not a factor, posting a .685 win percentage on the season. Although other teams’ fans may view it as a slight advantage, it is something that the Yankees are incapable of controlling.

A lack of games is temporarily an advantage, however, it could end up wreaking havoc on their schedule further down the season. The Yankees are without debate one of the best teams in the league, but if they are strafed with make-up games later on, then it could wind up demoralizing the team’s chances of remaining healthy in time for the postseason. Unfortunately, since it is only June, the Yankees will likely experience more rainouts, which only makes this topic space harder to swallow. The ball club needs to begin planning ahead for the inevitable event of doubleheaders being placed on their schedule, especially since the Red Sox are right on their tail.

All this talk of the weather might sound kind of redundant and useless, but unfortunately, this is where matters lie. The Yankees are approaching a position where it is difficult to pile on any more rainouts, even though there is still plenty of time left in the season. In order to meet the league’s loosely identified game count of 162 games in a season, then the Yankees will need to either schedule seven doubleheaders or take back a couple of off days. If the team takes away the rest days, then they will be putting themselves at risk of players getting injured or burned out. On the other hand, seven doubleheaders sound quite daunting, therefore a culmination of the two will likely be the acted upon the response of the team.

It is remarkable that in the first week of June, a team with 40 wins is not in first place in their division, but that is the case for the American League East. The Yankees are playing their best brand of baseball, but the question remains as to whether the team will be capable of maintaining their success once the make-up games take place. Nevertheless, be sure to monitor the Yankees, as well as the weather, to see if they are going to finally pull away in the standings.
